Writing an Argument Essay Topic
Writing an Argument Essay TopicTraditional argument essay topics involve multiple choices. Students are asked to justify their statements and give reasons for their beliefs and opinions. In a very conventional setting, this could be pretty easy but in the traditional college classroom, things can get even more complicated.Students should avoid the traditional argument essay topic and start out by preparing a short essay with a thesis statement. The actual essay should deal with at least one of the main topic areas. Another alternative is to present a statement of position or philosophical belief. Either option works well for most students. When students begin to write, they should plan their argument. The basic structure will include a hypothesis or point of view statement followed by supporting evidence or rationale. The supporting evidence must also be supported by the hypothesis. Two main types of supporting evidence exist. These are the persuasive case for the position and the sci entific case for the position. The main thesis statement is the initial statement that must be supported. It must be supported by supporting information. It should be able to stand on its own as it is the 'meat' of the essay.Supporting information is information used to support the main point. For example, students might introduce facts or data that help to reinforce their position. They may use math facts to show that supporting facts are false or that they are not correct.Supporting evidence is information or data that backs up the main argument. Some supporting information is subjective, while some is objective. In other words, some people value a point of view while others do not. Students must be sure to determine if their viewpoint is supported by the supporting evidence before moving on to the next step.Traditional argument essay topics require three parts: the hypothesis, supporting evidence and the main point. The main point needs to be supported by all three. In addition, i t must be demonstrated to be correct by the supporting evidence.Another type of argument essay topics is to present a question. Students may do this in many ways. It could be about a topic or event. The question can also be used to provide additional evidence in support of the main point.
